When Duxbury stormed back into contention Monday afternoon, it would have been easy for the Xaverian boys’ lacrosse team to collapse.
The Hawks’ five-goal lead after the first quarter was whittled to one at halftime and morphed into a tie game through three. But No. 1 Xaverian (3-1) regrouped in the fourth quarter, pulling away for a 13-11 win over the Dragons at Duxbury High.
“We tried to get back into the mindset we did at the beginning of the game,” Xaverian senior captain Trevor Carroll said. “We definitely got out of it in the second quarter, then we flipped the switch back on.”
Carroll paced the Hawks with six goals, including four in the second half. No. 7 Duxbury (2-2) relied on seven different goal-scorers, including a team-high three tallies from senior midfielder Jeff McDermott.
Xaverian surged ahead, 6-1, through one, then Duxbury rallied to slice the deficit to 8-7 at the half before a relatively even third quarter. Carroll converted with 8:26 left in the game to make it 11-10 Xaverian, then junior midfielder Shaun Padden provided the eventual game-winner with 7:26 remaining before another strike from Carroll.
Whenever the Hawks needed a lift, they turned to the catalyst Carroll. His final bullet of the night came from nearly parallel to the net, when he buried a contested shot off a seemingly impossible angle.
“Trevor came through in a big way, making some big shots and some gritty plays in the fourth quarter,” Xaverian coach Tim Gardner said.
