SUDBURY — Between the opening games of the 10th annual Coaches Cup, Massachusetts’ premier boys’ lacrosse tournament, all eight participating teams met on Lincoln-Sudbury’s Myers Field in support of a coaching legend.
Keith Bugbee, in his 36th season as head coach at Springfield College, has served as a mentor and coach to four of the head coaches in this year’s event — Andover’s Wayne Puglisi, Concord-Carlisle’s Tom Dalicandro, North Andover’s Steve Zella, and Dover-Sherborn’s Brian McLaughlin.
This year’s tournament is dedicated to the memory of Bugbee’s daughter, Lindsay, who died last July.
Lindsay Bugbee Crosby captained the women’s lacrosse and soccer teams at Springfield College, and was twice recognized as the Springfield College Female Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year. All proceeds from the 2019 Coaches Cup will de donated to her memorial fund.
“I’m incredibly humbled by this,” an emotional Bugbee said while encircled by players and coaches at midfield.
“[Lindsay] was a great athlete and someone that always showed up, and that’s something you can all take with you. I can’t tell you how thankful I am for you all.”
According to Lincoln-Sudbury coach Brian Vona, every Coaches Cup has been privately dedicated to an influential coach since 2010, but this was the first public honor.
“There’s not a single guy out here that would say ‘no’ to [Bugbee],” said Puglisi, whose son, C.J., will play for Bugbee at Springfield next year.
“We’re all from the same blood, we’re all from the same family, and it’s Keith’s tree that we’re passing on. It’s an incredible legacy and I fell fortunate to have played for him.”
Bugbee’s address followed a narrow 8-7 victory for Wellesley (4-0) over Dover-Sherborn (3-1).
D-S senior Tim Polk (3 goals, 2 assists) scored twice in the final 90 seconds to tie the game, 7-7, but Wellesley junior Teddy Komjathy buried a deep shot with 17 seconds remaining to win it for the Raiders.
“[Komjathy] doesn’t score a ton,” said Wellesley coach Jim Connolly, “but he kind of broke out of his shell today, and that’s great to see. Teddy battles for us at the [faceoff] X, so for him to get a goal at the end of the game is huge.”
