Points were at a premium in the 52nd Hanover-Norwell Thanksgiving tussle. But when Norwell called a play on its first possession in overtime, Cal Smith was confident the Clippers would score.
The junior quarterback converted his third-down rush into the winning 5-yard touchdown, lifting Norwell to a 6-3 victory in Hanover.
“As soon as we called the play, I knew that we were going to score,” said Smith, who rushed for 64 yards on 10 carries.
“They couldn’t stop us and it felt great winning that game for the seniors, especially in a tight one.”
Neither team could score in regulation and Norwell (8-2) stopped Hanover (4-6) when the hosts had possession in OT, forcing the Indians to settle for a 33-yard field goal from Chris Greene.
The Hanover attack was dealt a blow in the second half when backs Ryan Boutin (five rushes, 14 yards) and Neil Calkin (eight rushes, 15 yards) suffered leg injuries, limiting the team’s ability to run the ball late in the game.
Bay State
Walpole 42, Weymouth 21 — Senior quarterback Brett Lavanchy threw for 306 yards and five touchdowns — three to Drew von Klock — as the Rebels (4-7) presented Barry Greener a win in his final game as head coach. Hired as an assistant by John Lee in 1972, Green compiled a 74-27 record since 2009.
Newton North 41, Brookline 8 — Tigers quarterback Will Thompson was 7-for-8 passing for 185 yards and three TDs, and he also amassed 99 rushing yards and another score. Noah Neville found the end zone twice for the Tigers (7-4), catching one touchdown pass and returning a punt 60 yards in the second quarter. The Warriors fell to 3-8.
Milton 14, Braintree 7 — In a game marred by nine turnovers, Isaiah Woodley scored on a 77-yard bubble screen from Luke McMenamin in the first quarter and McMenamin delivered the tiebreaking 6-yard keeper with 3:54 left in the third quarter to propel the host Wildcats (8-2).
Cape Ann
Newburyport 27, Amesbury 0 — Owen Bradbury ran 18 times for 135 yards and was 10-for-16 passing for 102 yards as the Clippers (6-4) cruised to a big first-half lead. Bradbury also accounted for three touchdowns, running in two and tossing another to Noah Van Schalkwyk.
North Reading 27, Lynnfield 13 — Jake Bedell scored three TDs for the Hornets (7-4), including a 64-yard breakaway in the third quarter. Michael Luciano also tallied a touchdown for the hosts, returning a fumble 77 yards in their win over the Pioneers (8-3).
Ipswich 22, Hamilton-Wenham 20 — Ben Yanakakis scored from 2 yards in overtime and then found Alex Bruham on the 2-point conversion to lift the host Tigers (6-5) and earn a share of the Cape Ann Baker title along with the visiting Generals (9-2) and Lynnfield (8-3).
Triton 35, Pentucket 21 — Dylan Leavitt hauled in a 29-yard TD and scored on a 69-yard run for the Vikings (5-6).
Catholic Central
Archbishop Williams 20, Cardinal Spellman 13 — Orande Alfred bookended the scoring for the host Bishops (6-5), who improved their record to 27-13 over the Cardinals (6-5). Tom Veasey was named the Gravy Bowl MVP with six tackles and a sack.
Commonwealth
Shawsheen 36, Greater Lowell 6 — Cody Sughrue threw three TD passes and added another score on the ground to lift the visiting Rams (8-4), extending their overall lead to 21-4 over the host Griffins (5-6).
Northeast 40, Essex Tech 6 — Zach Sanderson carried the ball 28 times for 266 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Knights (4-7) in their second meeting against the Hawks (2-9). Sanderson finished his junior year with 2,100 yards — the highest single-season total in school history.
Dual County
Concord-Carlisle 63, Bedford 31 — Senior running back Jaylin Farquharson ran for four touchdowns, Robert Doherty ran for two touchdowns, and sophomore Christian Gemelli ran for three more scores (and kicked seven extra points) for the Patriots (5-6).
Eastern Athletic
Bishop Feehan 35, Bishop Stang 14 — Shamus Cochrane became the first Shamrock in the past decade to run for more than 1,000 yards and increased Bishop Feehan’s series lead to 5-0 over the host Spartans (4-7). The Shamrocks improved to 7-4.
Hockomock
Canton 27, Stoughton 0 — Alec Ragussa returned a fumble 46 yards before scoring on a 4-yard rush that lifted the host Bulldogs (5-6). Stoughton fell to 6-5.
Oliver Ames 10, Sharon 0 — Darnele Ryan’s 40-yard interception return in the fourth quarter highlighted an impressive defensive effort by the Tigers (6-5).
Mansfield 28, Foxborough 20 — Chris Copponi (8-yard catch) and Aidan Sacco (5-yard rush) scored fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Hornets closed an 8-3 season with a win in the 87th meeting with the host Warriors (5-6). Devin Hassett scored twice for Foxborough.
Mayflower
South Shore Voke Tech 42, Holbrook 8 — Kyle Lambiase and Cameron Lambrinos tallied two touchdowns each to give the Vikings (5-6) a home win in their first Thanksgiving meeting with Holbrook-Avon.
Merrimack Valley
Central Catholic 44, Lawrence 20 — Ty Donatio ran for a pair of scores in the second quarter to give the Raiders (10-1) a 44-7 halftime lead. The Lancers fell to 2-9.
North Andover 33, Andover 7 — Junior quarterback Jake McElroy was 8-for-12 passing for 185 yards and a touchdown, and added another touchdown on the ground for the Knights (9-2). Junior running back Darren Watson had 91 yards on the ground with a score and sophomore Mike Difo added two more rushing TDs.
Billerica 22, Chelmsford 14 — Morgan Mulkerin crossed the goal line and added a 2-point conversion to extend the host Warriors’ halftime lead to 22-0 before Billerica (7-4) hung on.
Middlesex
Lexington 44, Burlington 6 — Sal Frelick racked up 162 yards through the air and tossed five touchdown passes, and added a 54-yard rushing score to lift the visiting Minutemen (9-2). The senior QB finished the season with 30 TD passes and 21 rushing scores.
Watertown 35, Belmont 16 — Quarterback Nick McDermott connected with John Korte on touchdown passes of 43, 45, and 38 yards to lead the Raiders (7-5) past the Marauders (3-9).
Woburn 34, Winchester 14 — Isaiah Cashwell-Doe scored twice on the ground to rally the Tanners (7-4) past the Sachems (3-8) in the 113th meeting.
Melrose 35, Wakefield 12 — Isaac Seide found the end zone twice in the second half as the host Red Raiders (12-0) stayed unbeaten entering their Division 4 Super Bowl game against Nashoba.
Stoneham 24, Reading 20 — Junior running back Christos Argyropoulos scored three rushing touchdowns, including the winner with 35 seconds remaining, to lift the visiting Spartans (9-3) over the Rockets (3-8).
Northeastern
Salem 47, Beverly 25 — Senior running back Vinnie Gaskins ran for a school-record 305 yards and scored five touchdowns as the Witches (7-4) rolled over the Panthers (3-8) for the first time in seven years. Gaskins ended the season with 1,682 yards and 21 rushing scores.
Revere 17, Winthrop 14 — In the 87th meeting, Badr Haou booted a 25-yard field goal with 40 seconds left to lift the visiting Patriots (3-8) at the newly renovated Miller Field.
Gloucester 40, Danvers 28 — Jan Pena-Ortiz carried 29 times and racked up 326 yards to set the single-game rushing record for the host Fisherman (7-4), who increased their overall lead to 46-23-2 over the visiting Falcons (6-5).

Pembroke 35, Silver Lake 28 — With 35 seconds left, senior Nick Lane trucked over a defender and burst into the end zone from 5 yards, his fourth touchdown of the day, to lift the host Titans (4-7).
South Coast
Old Rochester 43, Apponequet 14 — Senior Harry Smith crossed the goal line on rushes of 5, 83, 9, and 13 yards. He also added a pair of 2-point conversions to lift the host Bulldogs (9-2), who trail their series, 21-16, with the Lakers (2-9).
Wareham 42, Bourne 8 — In the first half, senior Issac Nascimento rushed for one score, threw a pair of TD passes, and snared a 13-yard scoring catch as the Vikings (9-2) opened a 30-0 cushion.
Seekonk 34, Dighton-Rehoboth 6 — Terry Smith led the host Warriors (6-5) with four scores through the air and added a pair of 2-point conversions. Cam Sears caught a pair of scores in the second quarter to extend the halftime lead to 20-0 over the Falcons (4-7).
Somerset Berkley 28, Case 20 — Steven Fralick scored his second touchdown with 1:45 to play to put the visiting Raiders (7-3) ahead and secure the victory. Quarterback Chase Stafford also collected two crucial touchdowns on the ground for the Raiders, who dropped Case to 5-6.
South Shore
Carver 34, Middleborough 0 — In advance of their Division 6 Super Bowl appearance against Littleton on Dec. 2 at Gillette Stadium, the Sachems (9-3) rested their starters in a shutout loss to Carver (4-7).
Rockland 15, East Bridgewater 14 — Sam Gray connected with Zach Sharland for a pair of scores, including the winner with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter to lift the visiting Bulldogs (8-3) over the host Vikings (3-8).
Cohasset 34, Hull 14 — Senior running back Noah Froio (145 yards, two touchdowns) eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in a win for the visiting Clippers (6-5) over the Pirates (4-6).
Tri-Valley
Millis 17, Medway 0 — Bryce Latosek tossed TD passes of 55 yards to Andrew Brooks and 72 yards to Kurt Hopkins for Mohawks (11-1), who will play 11-0 Hoosac Valley in the Division 8 Super Bowl on Dec. 2.
Holliston 34, Westwood 0 — Brad Seymour ran for two long touchdowns in the second quarter to get the Panthers (5-5) out to a fast start in a rout of the Wolverines. Kevin Quinn and Ryan Benco threw touchdown passes, connecting with Billy Nash and Jake Armstrong. Dylan Ibbitson finally capped off the scoring for the Panthers with a 15-yard touchdown run.
Medfield 41, Dover-Sherborn 20 — Mason Giunta found pay dirt in both halves to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark on the season for the host Warriors (9-2).
Hopkinton 11, Ashland 7 — Senior outside linebacker Connor Herbert twice dropped Ashland players in the end zone for safties and Will Abbott tallied a rushing touchdown and two interceptions for the Hillers (11-1) in the 91st meeting.
Nonleague
Cathedral 28, Tech Boston 8 — Senior back Khalil Blair closed out his stellar career with 151 yards rushing and four touchdowns, giving him 34 for the season and a school-record 70 for his career, to power the Panthers (10-2). Blair, who piled up a school-record 4,800 yards in his career, scored on runs of 5 and 40 yards and receptions of 45 and 40 yards.
Dedham 23, Norwood 7 — Tyler Martell ran for three touchdowns, including two third-quarter scores that iced the win, and Jared Duane kicked a 35-yard field goal for the Marauders (6-5) in their 89th meeting with the Mustangs (0-11).
Mashpee 28, Sandwich 15 — Junior Devaun Ford had two rushing touchdowns and eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark to lead the No. 11 Falcons (12-0). Mashpee will play Blackstone Valley Tech in the Division 7 Super Bowl on Dec. 2.
Manchester Essex 49, Georgetown 20 — Robbie Sarmanian scored four touchdowns, running for 152 yards and totaling 102 receiving yards for the Hornets. Anna Zerilli also kicked a 25-yard field goal and four extra points for Manchester Essex.
New Mission 28, Burke 20 — Patrick Culbreath scored twice for the Bulldogs (3-6), but the Titans (6-4) pulled out the victory on second-half touchdowns from Takari Hobbs and Tryiston Champagne.
Falmouth 50, Barnstable 32 — Sophomore QB Kyle Connolly had 275 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and added a passing TD to help the host Clippers (6-5) take home the Selectmen’s Cup for the third consecutive year over visiting Barnstable (3-8).
Wayland 58, Weston 6 — Mason Bolivar finished 4 for 4 through the air for 153 yards and a score. He also rushed for 63 yards on three carries, two of which were touchdowns, to lift the visiting Warriors (7-4) over the host Wildcats (6-5).
Arlington 28, Arlington Catholic 8 — Juniors Adam Bowler and Joey Piazza combined for 178 rushing yards and four touchdowns for the Spy Ponders (6-5).
