Aidan Carroll leads BC High lacrosse in OT win over Needham

The first two weeks of BC High’s Division 1 title defense have certainly been eventful.

The boys’ lacrosse team dropped heartbreaking overtime decisions to St. John’s Prep and Reading, edged defending D3 state champion Cohasset, and suffered a blowout loss at the hands of rival Xaverian before hosting red-hot Needham in a nonleague affair Thursday.

While the 10th-ranked Rockets struck first with a big first quarter, No. 8 BC High rallied and wound up on the victorious side of a 13-12 overtime finish at James Cotter Field in Dorchester.

“There’s no better way to correct the mistakes of losing in overtime than to get a win in overtime against a quality team,” said BC High first-year coach Marcus Craigwell, whose team handed Needham (5-1) its first loss of the season. “We were composed and we just finished the job.”

The Rockets took an 8-2 lead after one quarter. But BC High (3-3) flipped the script in the second quarter, stringing together a 6-0 run to tie the contest, 8-8.

Both defenses shored up their mistakes in the second half and the teams remained deadlocked at 10-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

“Getting down 8-2 after the first quarter wasn’t ideal,” said BC High captain Nolan Collins. “But we came in the huddle and talked about being mentally tough, we said we’ve got nothing to lose in this game, now we just have to put it all on the line.”

Junior attack Aidan Carroll (5 goals) scored on a broken play to give BC its first lead, 11-10, and sophomore Owen Porter scored from a seated position in the midst of a mad scrum to give the Eagles a 12-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Converted midfielder Christian Bliss made several clutch saves down the stretch to keep the Rockets alive, allowing for Brendan Walsh (goal, 4 assists) to find Matt Guagliamo (2 goals) for a score to make it a one-goal game.

With 17 seconds remaining, BU commit Jason Child (4 goals) buried a clutch goal to send the game to overtime, but Collins (17 for 25 at the faceoff X) won the draw to start overtime and Carroll scored off a pick play to win it for the Eagles.

“I think we came out better than [BC High] expected,” said Needham coach Dave Wainwright.

“They made in-game adjustments, we did not. They got momentum, it changed the flow, and we weren’t able to get back to what was working for us.

“But our entire team is really going to grow from this in a positive way. This was a good learning experience whether we won or not.”

Oliver Ames 16, Bellingham 2 — Hunter Costello netted five goals for the Tigers (6-0) in the winover the Blackhawks (0-7).

Reading 9, Billerica 7 — Sophomore Matt Blasi scored three goals and an assist to lead the Rockets (6-0).

St. John’s Prep 10, Franklin 9 — Senior Luke Brennan (two goals) scored the winner in overtime for the Eagles (6-2) in the semifinals of the Creators Crosse tournament in Lexington. Senior Alex Kreher finished with 18 saves, including two key stops in the final minute of regulation and four more in OT. Senior Pat Keefe and junior Michael Kelly each added two goals and one assist. Prep will take on Walpole in the title game.

Walpole 10, Lexington 5 — Senior attack Conor Foley netted five goals and senior Joe McGrath delivered 11 saves as the Rebels (2-3) stopped the host Minutemen in the semifinals of the Creators Crosse Tournament in Lexington. Sophomore Ben Quinn scored twice and went 13-for-19 on faceoffs. Charlie Birnberg and Oneniotekowa Maracle led Lexington with a pair of goals each. Walpole will face St. John’s Prep Saturday in the final.

Westwood 10, Scituate 9 — In the consolation game of the 12th Chowda Cup, the Wolverines (3-3) erased a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter and prevailed in double overtime.

Girls’ lacrosse

Braintree 7, Marshfield 6 — Junior Ella Tenney led the Wamps (5-1) with two goals and two assists.

Canton 13, Quincy 2 — Juniors Caroline Tourgee and Kaitlyn Goyetch scored five goals apiece to lead the Bulldogs (3-3) over the Presidents (1-5).

Medford 14, Matignon 4 — Senior Jenna Sullivan (6 goals) led the Mustangs to their first win.

Nauset 18, Barnstable 2 — Eliza Stevens and Maddy Daley netted five goals apiece for the Warriors (2-2).

Newton North 15, Winchester 11 — Devin Willen made 15 saves for the visiting Tigers (5-1).

Baseball

Attleboro 6, North Attleborough 5 — Eoin Kelleher threw a complete game for the Bombardiers (4-3), striking out five and also tallying two base hits.

BC High 9, Wachusett 3 — Will McCarthy’s two-run double punctuated a 5-run fourth inning for the third-ranked Eagles (7-1) in a nonleague matchup.

Brighton 12, Burke 2 — Freshman Joe Schlueber earned his first varsity win, throwing a two-hitter for the Bengals (2-4).

Burlington 4, Winchester 2 — Sophomore Nick Pye struck out five in 6.1 innings and junior Alex Stamedes socked two solo homers.

Catholic Memorial 1, Lincoln-Sudbury 0 — Mike Gemma went the distance for the Knights (3-1), striking out six.

Franklin 5, Stoughton 3 — Senior Scott Elliott went 2 for 4 with a two-run homer for the No. 3 Panthers (6-0) in the Hockomock win.

King Philip 4, Canton 3 — Senior David Morganelli allowed one earned run over seven innings and Zack Zarba drove in two runs for the Warriors (3-2).

Lynnfield 7, Newburyport 0 — Senior Fernando Gonzalez spun a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and added a two-run double to pace the 10th-ranked Pioneers (3-0).

Mansfield 6, Milford 0 — Jake Gerraughty threw a one-hit shutout as the Hornets (5-1) blanked the Scarlet Hawks (3-3) in the Hockomock League.

Millis 14, Dover-Sherborn 11 — The Mohawks toppled D-S on the strength of an 11-run sixth inning. Sophomore Michael Govoni went 4 for 5 with two doubles and two runs scored.

North Quincy 8, Blue Hills 4 — Sophomore Liam Hines (3 for 4) cracked three doubles, knocked in three runs, and scored three for the Red Raiders in the consolation game of the Steven J. Sullivan Tournament. Brady McGuinness struck out six in six innings.

St. Sebastian’s 4, Tabor 3 — Junior Matt Joyce went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, including a run-scoring single that drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth for the Arrows (9-0). Joyce also pitched five innings and scattered three hits while striking out eight batters. Freshman Joey Sylvester picked up his first varsity win pitching three innings of relief.

Stoneham 6, Belmont 5 — Sophomore Nick Banforth struck out 11 in a complete game effort for the Spartans (2-2).

Whitman-Hanson 8, Cardinal Spellman 0 — Ethan Phelps and Tom Marshall combined for the shutout, with Marshall striking out the final six batters to close the door for the No. 19 Panthers (4-0).

Whittier 2, Greater Lowell 0 — Senior Matt Michel tossed a five-hit shutout for the Wildcats (4-0).

Woburn 5, Melrose 0 — Senior Ryan Qualey allowed four hits while spinning his second consecutive shutout for the Tanners (3-1).

Xaverian 7, Norwood 1 — Junior right fielder Erik Foster (3 for 4) cracked a homer and knocked in four runs for the Hawks (3-4).

Softball

Austin Prep 12, Danvers 6 — Lauren Sablone went 4 for 5 with three runs scored as the Cougars (3-2) topped the Falcons (1-2).

Boston Latin 12, Waltham 0 — Senior Caitlyn Murphy went the distance for the Wolfpack (4-0), striking out 12.

Brooks 18, Milton 5 — Sydney Correa went 4-for-5 with a home run to lead the Bishops.

Dennis-Yarmouth 16, Barnstable 1 — Kayla McGaffigan and Julia Kent each socked two-run homers for the Dolphins (5-1).

Essex Tech 11, Salem 4 — Senior Ali Vienneaux went 3-for-4 4 with 3 RBIs for the Hawks (3-1).

Foxborough 16, Oliver Ames 3 — Sophomore Nicole Theriault went 3 for 3 and senior Emma Rohan struck out four in a complete game to boost the Warriors (2-3).

Franklin 13, Stoughton 1 — Ally Shaw (4 for 4, double, 3 runs) and Gabby Colace (3 for 4, 2 RBIs, 3 runs) powered the Panthers (3-1) to the Hockomock League win.

Mansfield 18, Milford 0 — Senior Sarah Cahill struck out eight in a one-hit effort for the Hornets (3-2) as nine batters combined to tally 11 hits.

North Attleborough 10, Attleboro 1 — Sophomore Emily Nardelli (3 hits) cracked a two-run homer for the Red Rocketeers (4-0) against the Bombardiers (3-3).

Reading 6, Wilmington 5 — Freshman Jackie Mally knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Rockets (2-2).

Saugus 8, Northeast 7 — Emma Howard (2 for 3) belted a grand slam and knocked in six runs for the Sachems (2-2). Nystasia Rowe and Alexa Ferraro both went 2 for 4.

Girls’ track

Lynn Classical 71, Somerville 61 — Rachel Brennan legged out wins in the 800 meters (2:38) and the mile (5:56) in the win for the Rams.

Boys’ volleyball

Needham 3, Winchester 1 — Juniors Will Bandler (18 kills) and Luke Van Putten (15 kills) led the No. 8 Rockets (5-1) past the No. 10 Sachems (5-1) in the championship game of the April Break ALS ONE Invitational at Winchester High School. Bandler was named tournament MVP. Winchester senior James Chung registered 13 kills and 14 digs, and an ace.

Wayland 3, Lawrence 1 — Junior Ryan Fuller and sophomore Mike Long had 12 kills apiece to lead the 13th-ranked Warriors (5-3) over the No. 7 Lancers (3-2) in the consolation game of the April Break ALS ONE Invitational at Winchester High. Fuller added 10 digs and senior Jack Flagg (6 blocks) and junior Gavyn Davies (5 blocks) anchored Wayland’s defense. Lawrence senior outside hitter Delfy Soler tallied 20 kills.
